The music of Doug Wood
combines the subleties of folk and jazz music with the intensity of acoustic
rock.
Background
Originally born and raised in Denver, CO Doug started playing electric guitar
at age 12. At age 16 he played for his High School jazz band in Huron, Ohio.
He was given his Guild F-212 12-string acoustic guitar as a gift from his
brothers and his life soon became an acoustic adventure. With his Guild 12-string
in hand he went on to play with his college jazz band at John Carroll University
in Cleveland. The experience playing for jazz bands, mixed with the influence
from musical acts like Yes, Steve Tibbetts, Rush, and Leo Kottke, propelled
Doug to think beyond the confines of the typical folk chords, and started
him on a journey of writing his own instrumental compositions.
After graduating college in 1989, Doug was introduced (thanks alot Brien Farley)
to the phenominal bass player Darren Frate. Doug and Darren started the instrumental
folk/rock/jazz fusion group WATTS GNU, which within 3 years started to get
some great national attention. From 1991 to 1997 you could see them both performing
in the streets and subways of Boston, or at various concert venues and colleges
along the East Coast and throughout the midwest. WATTS GNU was a finalist
in the Boston "Acoustic Underground" Competition and a finalist
in the SPIN MAGAZINE/PIZZA HUT "New Sounds for Original Music" Competition
in 1992. Watts Gnu released their only CD Kindred Spirit in 1994. The CD received
decent airplay on NPR and Commercial jazz stations across the country.
Doug began writing his solo music in 1999. He released his debut CD I Am Kiroc
in 2000, and his CD "Solace" in 2002. Doug has recently celebrated
the release of his new CD "Dreamcatcher" in the Fall of 2006.
All the CD's have received airplay from Commercial, College, and NPR stations
across the country (including being featured on Morning Edition, Echoes,
and River City Folk). Doug currently tours colleges, festivals, and
concert venues across the country.
Doug's live recording of his song "Journey" was selected to be part
of the WCSX 94.7 FM (Detroit-May, 2002) Compilation CD Over Easy
to benefit Gilda's Club, a non-profit organization originally started by Gilda
Radner to raise money for Cancer research and education. The CD features national
and regional touring musicians, including Dar Williams, Joel Mabus, Sally
Taylor, and many others.
Doug's song "Sophie's Song" is featured on the compilation disc
put out by "The ROOM." The ROOM is a review magazine based in Mobile,
AL, and the CD features a host of really great acoustic musicians. Check out
the ROOM at www.reviewoforiginalmusic.com.
